You will need to do your study before even thinking of getting any kind of bird. There are books on caring for birds here and lots of information to be found on the internet.

You will need to know as much about the species of bird you are wanting to get as for behavior, correct diet and so on.

You'll need information on what kind and size of cage is right plus perches have to be made from safe wood natural branches to provide feet and legs with relaxation so they do not develop arthritis at an early age.

Food is a very important issue, and there are organic pellets found here with Harrison's being the best. The change from seeds to pellets takes time and below is article written by Avian Vet about how to go about this:

The other important issue is having an Avian Vet. Your bird needs to be taken in for an examination by an Avian Vet only the first few days you have him. Infections are common with birds being moved around and being put together with lots of other birds because these infections are highly contagious.

So, do your study work, Find an Avian Vet in your driving area, get as large a cage as possible so your bird can have plenty of room for play. Make sure perches are the correct kind and size, and learn about poisonous and safe plants and wood. Once you finish all your study, you will be ready to get your bird and then you will begin to learn even more. Learning is never over when we have birds, so do the stuff you HAVE to do before bird comes, and then continue to learn more about your bird and birds in general after he's in your home.

Thanks for writing and asking the right questions BEFORE getting your bird. This kind of common sense is what we'd like to see more of.
