New bird owner needs help

We recently adopted a 7 yr old male Sun Conure. We have small bird experience, budgies, finches; but no larger bird experience.

My question is how long do I leave him alone? He has sat on our fingers at first. He would come out of his cage and I would walk up and tell him up. He knows the command. Now he doesn't come out of the cage at all. He will come up to you if you have food he likes and take it out of your hand. But when I tell him "up" he goes to the back corners of the cage and hangs on the bars.

Should I make him come out? Or should I just leave him alone? We have had him about a week.

Dina, Congratulations on your adoption. Sun Conures are beautiful, playful and very loving birds. I took my Sun Conure home when he was only a few months old and he was still nervous. Imagine adopting a 7 yr old child who knows nothing about you. They're going to be very cautious in the beginning. Give him time to get used to you and don't force him to come out of the cage. I don't know what the situation is with his prior flock, but if he misses them he may be sad or he may have even been abused. My conure is now almost 5 yrs old and there are times he won't come to me either (but that's pretty much any time I'm trying to get him back in the cage). So I fake him out. I pretend I'm walking away to do something fun without him and he'll fly to me. Once I have him on my shoulder he'll go to my finger and I back him into the cage without him realizing what's happening. Again, though, I wouldn't force him to come out. Make sure you have a birdy bed for him that's soft, lots of dried papaya and toys toys toys!!! Keep the cage clean, water clean and eventually he'll come around. Good luck!!!

Hello,
Some birds would prefer to come out of their cages on their own and dislike hands coming into their cages. Two of my birds come out and stand on their doors where I can safely step them up. Otherwise, if I put my hand in the cage and try to insist they step up, I'll get bitten. See if your Sun Conure will come out on his own - then you can gently persuade him to step onto your hand. good luck with him!
