New Jenday Conure.....10yrs old

I just adopted a 10yr old male jenday conure and he seemed really social and sweet when I got him. He was okay with me until he met my boyfriend. Now he only likes my boyfriend and refuses to get along with anyone else. My boyfriend does not really like birds but has been enjoying petting and sitting with the bird.

We have the option to return him to his old owner with the knowledge that he will only find him a new home again. My boyfriend feels bad about this as do I. I would like more than anything to keep him and get him to be more interested in me and nicer to everyone. Is it possible to accomplish this or has his mind been made up already? Please offer any advice you can and thank you.

New Jenday Conure.....10yrs old

Please don't take this the wrong way as it is constructive criticism. Your commitment to this bird seems not the best, so if you don't feel totally committed to the bird the best thing, in my opinion, for the bird is to take him back to previous owner.

This bird has probably had many homes during his lifetime and most of them were crappy. If you have not taken him to an Avian Vet to be checked for illness or infection then now is the time to do it. First, you have to make a solid commitment to this bird that you are going to work with him and for him until he trusts you and your boyfriend. If you cannot make this kind of commitment, then please give him another chance by taking him back to his owner.

Birds take a long time adjusting to new homes, and trust is earned not freely given just because you are there. You have to win his trust, and the only way to do that is give him some room to be himself, clean his cage, feed him a highly nutritious organic pelleted diet, and take him to the Avian Vet when needed. If he has not been seen by avian vet, then he needs to be because there could be all kinds of physical problems going on here.

As I said at the beginning, don't take any of this the wrong way. Take it as constructive suggestions for the sake of you and your bird. You either make a commitment of time, money and energy to this bird or take him back, and that is as simple as I can make it.

Conure quit liking you
by: Tracie

I had this happen with my green cheeked conure. Eventually, with the help of my husband that she decided she liked best, my conure eventually liked me too.

Please read the story on our Parrot Training page titled "Answer for biting GC conure" for more information about how we did this.

I believe with time and patience, the bird will eventually tolerate you, but it may never prefer you again.
