Nostril area pink.

Blue and Gold Macaw with pink nare

I have a 6 month old Blue & Gold Macaw. He is acting very normal, appetite normal but every so often he itches his nostrils. I notice they are pink as well off and on. Is this an allergy or something more serious?

Allergies cause this. If you have a cockatoo or other powder-down bird, you need to separate them immediately. Chronic respiratory disease is common in such situations. It could also be that the air is too dry. Try using a humidifier and give more frequent showers. Finally you need to have him examine by an avian veterinarian. This could be a rhinitis or sinusitis.

Nostril pink area

I would get the Avian Vet to check your Macaw over.
When he seems to have this itchiness look at what is around him that is different & check the food out, is anything different?
