Not drinking.
by: Anonymous

My CAG, had a tumble, got injured, went to the avian vets, and got 7 stitches. (She plays really rough, thus had an accident).

Now I only mention this, bc after her surgery she was a bit traumatized from the fall, the injury, ETC. She wasn't in the mood to drink either, or eat. She ended up dropping like 30 grams in weight.

I encouraged her to drink by using an oral syringe (get one from your pharmacy), with 100% fruit juice that was diluted half with water... this encouraged her to drink. But every day, I put less juice in and more water, until I saw her drinking on her own again.

However, I made sure to consistantly consult with my vets, who called me everyday to check on my bird's well-being and aftercare. (That's an avian vet who honestly cares!)

If your bird isnt drinking, it's most likely bc he's ill, sick, or injured. You need to get your bird to the vet, to find out WHY he's not drinking. He will dehydrate and die! We'd love to be able to tell you exactly WHY he's not drinking, but this is a forum, no one here can examine your bird or run tests to find out why. We cant even prescribe meds. So, it's important to get him to the AVIAN VETS for an EXAM. They arent as expensive as you think. Avian vet seems cheaper then my cats vet, honestly. lol.

Good luck!

Parrot not drinking
by: Tracie

If your parrot is not drinking at all, then you need to get your bird to an avian vet right now! Nothing replaces water. It's kidneys need water to function properly.

If this is a new parrot, you may need to drive over to your breeder's home and get some of their water, if you are on a different water system. Or possibly they use bottled water and you can go and purchase that brand of water and slowly convert the bird to your water.

You can use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet if you don't already have one.
