Bird barbering feathers
by: The Avian Vet

This is a common problem called barbering. It can be caused by a medical condition or a behavior problem, often caused by anxiety. I recommend that you have him examined by an avian veterinarian.

Your bird sounds like he is over preening. Most likely due to boredom.

Try taming and training your bird. Introduce new items slowly to him. Your bird is bored and over preening as a result.

Stress can also result in over preening, and lead to plucking later.

Try moving the perches or toys in his cage.
Every 2-3 days move one item in his cage. Or introduce a new toy.

My bird's toys get roatated from the cage to playstand to a bucket if there's no place for it.

This keeps the bird interested, and from over preening.

Your bird will molt according to the amount of sunlight he gets per day. Birds are on a biological clock which lines up with the sunlight hours.

Prehaps your bird needs more natural sunlight. Open a window, prehaps take him outside if his wings are clipped.

There's many things you can do to prevent over preening. You can even spritz him down once a day with a water bottle.

Hope this helps. GL
