One Love bird and 5 Eggs...Are the eggs infertile

by Angie
(Columbia MD)

My 2 year old lovebird is laying eggs. Aren't they infertile? Do I take them away? She is guarding them like a dog.

Bird laying eggs
by: Tracie

The birds would not be fertile unless you have a male in the cage. You should leave the eggs, if she is guarding them, until she loses interest. Only remove cracked eggs, if that happens.

Please read our Chronic Egg Laying article written by an avian vet for understanding how to care for birds that lay eggs.

Hopefully your bird eats 80% Harrison's or Roudybush pellets to prevent egg binding. If not, then also read our Switching Birds To Pellets article for helping your bird in the future.
