One Parakeet pinning other to the floor cage

by Elizabeth
(Pennsylvania)

One parakeet has its wings spread and is on top of the other. The second parakeet is on its back on the floor of the cage. Are they fighting? Mating? I've had them for 2 years and have never seen this behavior.

One Parakeet pinning other to the floor cage

This is not playing, and this IS aggressive behavior. Both your birds need to be taken to an Avian Vet for an exam for infections or other physical issues with health. Sick birds are routinely killed in the wild and in captivity. Sick or injured birds bring predators, so when one is perceived to be ill or injured the bird is either killed outright or driven from a wild flock to die alone.

One or both of your birds could be ill or becoming ill, so take both in to make sure all is well. It is very unusual for two birds who have been together this long to just now start the fighting, so my thoughts lean toward illness in one or both. I would separate them into two cages for now until you find out what is going on. Budgies' aggression leads to severe injuries or death, so please separate them quickly and then have them examined.

Let us know what avian vet has to say and thanks for writing,
Linda
