Orange Winged Amazon grieving

by Judy

My father recently passed away and I'm taking care of his orange-wing amazon. My dad got Beau when he was just a few weeks old and hand fed him, he is now twelve. I'm sure he misses my dad, could you please tell me about a parrot's grieving behavior and what I can do to help.

Grieving Amazon Parrot

Hello Judy,

I am very sorry to read about your dad passing away. That must be very hard for you and the bird too.

Many birds do go through a grieving period and express their grief in different ways. Some sulk and don't eat as much for a while and others can be aggressive.

I would suggest just spending time with the bird at his comfort level. By that I mean if he likes to be held, then hold him and talk with him. If he is still getting to know you and doesn't trust you yet, then sit by his cage and talk sweetly to him.

If you know what kind of treats are his favorite, you can offer him a treat when he responds positively to you such as coming to you or not biting you depending on whether or not you are having these issues.

I hope all goes well for both of you. It is sweet that you are taking care of his bird.

If you are new to birds, please note that cooking with Teflon will potentially kill the bird and many fragrance items put out for making your house smell good will kill birds too.
