lose of feathers

I have had my orange wing amazon for about one month and he is now loosing his feathers under his neck. You can actually see his skin. What could this be?

Editor's Note: You need to take your bird to an avian vet asap. In the future, please post your question as a new question, not as an answer.

I agree with Tracie that this is probably molting. However, it should be looked at by an avian veterinarian. Many times birds will develop dry skin if they are not bathed often enough or if the humidity is too low in the home.

Homes should be 60% relative humidity for birds to be comfortable, be able to breath normally, and have supple skin. They should bath 2-3 times weekly, and more if they have dry skin. Supplement bathing with Avi-x Bird Rain to relieve the itching.

hi tracy, no it is both and at the back of his neck now, he is not loosing feathers but is still scratching alot....mostly on a night time

molting sound reasonable, i thought it might be bird dandruff after reading a few of other peoples questions as i have noticed what looked like dandruff as he scratches.

thanks pat :)

Hi Pat,

It sounds like he is molting to me. Is he only scratching under one wing?
