Panama amazon doing really big poos

Hi I have a amazon, she is 8 years old and I have had her for that time, suddenly this week she has started to do really big poos, as big or bigger than the bottom of a mug, she seems happy as usual, but I just wondered why this is happening, she is also doing her normal smaller poos as well, just not as much, she has been playing inside her cardboard boxes a lot lately, maybe she holds on to it for a lot longer, I don't know, any ideas please, Thanks

I don't think shes ill, she was recently at the vets and had blood tests etc as she started plucking herself al of a sudden, that was why I started to give some boxes to tear up to occupy her, having read what people have said here, I think it is a mixture of the box shes holding on to the poo until she comes out, and the fruit she eats, she eats loads of fruit, she loves it, she has pretty bird supplment and a good mix, I didn't know fruit was bad for them more than a couple of times a week, no wonder vet said she was fat, I stopped giving her treats, ie: chips, crisps etc and she has lost weight.
Oh ! just in case it may help anyone, after giving the vet 100 quid and being no wiser, I realised for myself that she was plucking because I has started using a new plug in air freshener, I took it away and she stopped straight away, I was so happy,no one ever mentioned plug ins when I was scouring the web for info.

Panama Amazon with large droppings
by: The Avian Vet

It may be related to something she is eating or she may be starting to nest. I recommend NOT giving her a cardboard box because this stimulates nesting and egg laying.

I hope your bird is eating pellets, like Harrison's , to prevent any nutritional problems such as egg binding. I suspect she is acting like the box is her nest and holding her droppings. You should have her examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure it is not something else such as a disease or infection.

There are a couple of reasons this could be happening. One is she is eating too much fruit and/or soft foods or too much food in general. The other is that she has a bacterial infection that needs to be diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet. If she is NOT eating too much soft food, then she probably has an infection. If she has not been seen by an Avian vet in a year, then she needs to go for a checkup anyway, and they can do a throat swab for bacterial infections and blood work for signs of other infections. She could also have internal parasites like worms, but you probably would have seen this happen before now if that was the case.

If she is on an all seed diet, then she needs to be eating an organic high quality pellet as the seeds are a really poor diet. Fruit and veggies need be NO more than 10-15% of overall diet meaning she should only have fruit and veggies a few times a week in small amounts.

So, I suggest you take her to Avian vet to rule out physical causes for the large poops which sounds like a digestive problem caused by something. When vet goes to test for bacterial infections, please have them do a throat swab as just the anal swab is not reliable as there is ALWAYS some bacteria in the anal area. Throat swab will show a bacterial infection and enable pinpointing exact type as well.

Thanks for writing,
