parakeet died

I noticed 14 year old parakeet yesterday did not want to put one leg down. I noticed small red bump on foot. He would not eat or drink water. Today in later evening he got on the bottom of his cage and layed down. I went to call vet and when i was on the phone with vet , my parakeet died. I would like to know if you could give me an idea of what may have been wrong?

I am sorry that you lost your companion. The only way to know what happened is to do a necropsy (animal autopsy). The bump on the foot may or may not have been part of the problem or a symptom of the problem. The bump may have been gout which is secondary to kidney failure. It may have simply been an arthritic lesion. 14 years is considered old for a budgie, and the death may have been age related, which is usually organ failure. Hope this helps.

Sounds like your bird died from old age. Fourteen years is a long time for a parakeet. Mine was only five when she died and exhibited the same behavior: something wrong with foot, wouldn't perch, wouldn't eat or drink and went to bottom of cage and passed. There is no way to tell how your bird died unless you have a necropsy (bird autopsy) done. So sorry for your loss.
