parakeet hole in chest

by Edlyn Richelderfer
(Hardwick, N.J. USA)

My parakeet had a spot on her chest that I thought was just dirt. When I tried to clean her I saw it was blood and a small hole. She is in with a male but they are bonded. Could she have done it herself? There don't seem to be any feathers missing.

The male could have done this, and I suggest you separate them into two cages until her wound is healed. This wound may very well become infected, so please take her to be examined and treated by an Avian Vet in your driving area. Use NO over the counter meds or home remedies on her because you do not know if this was caused from external circumstances or if it is a tumor that has ruptured. Only an Avian Vet can diagnose and treat birds.

Once she has been given meds by an Avian Vet, continue to keep her away from the male. Bonded pairs will hurt each other because I have a pair of Amazons who are permanently separated because hen hurts the male. They live in a double Macaw cage with divider in the middle so they are close but not too close.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
