parakeet is picky stuff out from under his tail

by Courtney
(Sparta, MI, USA)

My parakeet is picking black chips out from underneath his tail. We don't know why, or what it is. The black stuff is above his butt, but below his tail... Does this mean he is sick or something?

My Bird Just Died
by: claire

Our parakeet just died. It was very swift. She had that glob on her butt too, and she was picking on it...I thought of taking her to a vet. But, after 3 days, she cannot get up or fly. She was walking on the floor of the cage, it was a really odd behavior. It was too late. =(

RIP Cindy

Bird needs to see an avian vet
by: The Vet

Only a few things can be black coming from that area. Dried blood, bile-stained feces, blood feather debris, or foreign material (not of bodily origin).

You should take your bird in to see an avian veterinarian to have this looked at. When you find out, could you please let me know what it turns out to be?
