Unfortunately the parakeet is very sick. Your parakeet might have a change at living if you Find an Avian Vet to examine and treat the bird.

You didn't say, but I know that many people that purchase budgies do not know about pellet diets. They feed their birds an all seed diet or even human food that is full of chemicals and salt. These birds die from fatty liver disease or other illness due to the lack of nutrition and high fat in their diet.

If your grandfather decides to get another bird, please have him look for a breeder that weans their birds to pellets, or read our Switching Birds To Pellets article to get the bird on a healthy diet.
