Parakeet over grooming

by micah

Hi, I have two parakeets that I purchased from Petco about a month ago. I noticed last night, that one of the birds is overgrooming itself. I wanted to know is this cause for concern and if so what kind of home remedies can I use?

Budgie grooming

You say over grooming. How do you mean over grooming? What makes you think that the bird is over grooming

Budgies spend so much of their time grooming. Some people say that they groom 50% of the time.

If you are worried, see an avian vet, but rest assured if it is just a lot of normal type grooming, budgies groom A LOT.

Mine do exactly the same.

Unfortunately Dr B can not help without examining your bird. You always have to make sure that the bird doesn't have an infection or disease before doing anything else. Otherwise you may make the symptoms better while the underlying cause is just getting worse.

Pet store chains often purchase birds from "bird mills" that do not raise birds in healthy environments. They just raise birds for profit, the breeders are not certified healthy by avian vets, if one bird gets a disease it passes it on to others etc.

Here is an article written by Dr B for folks with birds that pick at their feathers. Feather Damaging Behavior article

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
