Parakeet Problem - red cere

by Cindy

I have a 4-year-old female parakeet. She is alone but has laid eggs once a year for the past 3 years. She is currently sitting on eggs she laid a week ago, but now her usually normal cere has turned red (it looks bloodshot). Anything to worry about?

Parakeet with red cere

I hope your bird is eating pellets, like Harrison's. This diet is the only way to guarantee complete and balanced nutrition especially during times of egg laying. Allow her to sit on the eggs until she tires of them. This will reduce the number that she lays. As for the red cere, this is abnormal and should be looked at by an avian veterinarian.
