Parakeets Blinking is off...

by Anna-Marie
(Washington)

My parakeet seems to be blinking weird. His right eye is completley normal, however the eye seems to blink at seperate times, and stays closed a tick longer than the rights. I was just curious is this is just a weird tick or if its somthing i should be concerned about. this bird means a lot to my little sister and a response would be much apprechiated. thank you!

Birds blinking
by: The Avian Vet

This could be caused by a foreign body in the eye. It could be other causes, too. It is not likely a tic. I recommend that you have him examined by an avian veterinarian.

Birds can open and close each eye seperately.
This is normal. It does however sound to me, that your bird might be trying to nap, but still interested in whats going on around him.

Birds need about 10-14 hrs of sleep per night. My vet suggests a good 12. I put my birds to bed at 8 pm. and wake them around 8 am. If you arent able to find a quiet dark place for roosting, then prehaps covering the cage to block out some light would help. Birds are on a timer. The sun comes up, poof! They're awake. Sun goes down they settle in for the night. THey're like clockwork.

I personally dont like to cover mine, but I cant always provide a dark room. a Quiet room yes, but not always dark. So I cover them when needed so they can sleep.

A bird will nap during the day.
I do however suggest a vet if this is bothering you, or it looks as though it might be a bigger problem then a lack of sleep.

Your bird should be seen at least once a year for a wellness visit. Forums cannot fix health issues. Only offer advice. Take him to a vet to rule out illness. GOod Luck!
