parakeets Mickey and Minnie
Mickey and Minnie, named by my grandchildren are a very fun pair of parakeets. I have had them for 3 years. They are in a large cage and tame. They are a great source of fun for me and my grandchildren.
They are on a pellet and seed diet and have had no health problems.
In March of this year I was cleaning their cage and as usual they had shredded a few things. To my surprise I found 2 eggs. They DO NOT have a nest box as I see no reason to breed them. Well they had a different idea this year!
I removed the eggs and then did some research. I changed the lining from paper towels to newsprint (no colors), rearranged their cage some. I was afraid they were determind and read they may keep doing this and not good for their health. One article said they must feel very secure and to get a dog..........have one! I moved their cage some and also changed the cycle of the floor lamp that comes on automacticly daily. So far no more eggs.
When I went online for information and called the vet found that this does happen frequently. I wasn't interested in the hormone treatment and hoped to stop this before it became a problem. so far so good. I did also put a couple of glass marbles in the cage and they push them around.
I guess these guys did not read all the books I did and were not worried about a nest box and decided to build one in the bottom back corner of the cage.
I have two other birds in a different part of the house and have not seen any diffence in their behavior. The new birds are Lovebirds, Heckle and Jeckle. They are doing great also.
