Parents wont recognize the chicks. What do I do?

I have a pair of green cheek conures and we were originally not expecting them to have babies so there was only a small cloth in the cage. But they ended up using the cloth as a nest and now they have two babies. Over time the nest became really dirty so in fear of the babies becoming sick, I changed the nest one or twice, and both times, the parents still returned to the nest.

However today, I decided to once again change the nest but now the parents won't recognize the nest or the babies. What should I do? I've used a hot water bottle filled with warm water to keep the babies warm for a little bit and when I took it away, the mother returned for a little bit and sat on them. Then she left again. Also, the father seemed to feed them a little. Will the parents return for good?

Unless you have already begun to feed these babies using baby parrot handfeeding formula, you are going to watch them die of starvation.

Both babies may be sick and both need to be examined by an Avian Vet in your area. Considering the filthy conditions they've been exposed to, my guess is both have infections, and parents will sometimes abandon sick babies and allow them to die. Starvation is a slow and very painful death, so either take them to an Avian Vet for diagnosis and treatment or to have them euthanized.

Separate these two birds into two different cages and forget all about breeding birds until you know what you are doing. Anytime a male and female are put together, the outcome can be babies. You have to know how to care for baby parrots, how to handfeed them safely, and this is a learned skill not one that can be picked up right away without any experience. There are many other things you have to know before being responsible for bringing life into this world, and you have a long way to go.

I'm sorry if I appear to be hard hearted here, and nothing could be farther from the truth. Either get these babies examined, diagnosed and treated and start handfeeding them or have Avian Vet put them out of their misery. The parent birds may also be sick, so all your birds need a trip to an Avian Vet.
