Jennifer, your bird needs to be examined by an Avian(Bird) Vet as soon as you can get an appointment with one. The sore you described is not normal and may be an infection or a tumor that needs to be checked out and possibly treated.

If you have trouble finding an Avian Vet, there is a link on this site that can help you with that. It is important that you not wait to take bird in as this could get much worse.

As for sexing Budgies, the sexually mature males have Blue Ceres (the area with the nose holes), and sexually mature females have tan to brown ceres. It does not take long for a Budgie to become sexually mature, so watch for the signs. Immature males have a purplish cere, and the immature females have a bluish cere. The male's purplish cere changes to blue, and the female's bluish changes to tan or brown as they are older.

Let us know what the Avian Vet has to say, and ONLY take your bird to an Avian Vet, not a dog and cat vet. The dog and cat vets are not licensed or trained in diagnosing and treating birds and will hurt your bird instead of helping it.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
