parrotlets housed together

As Tracie said, if they have lived together previously without problems, they will be fine. If, however, they are new to each other, they must be put into separate cages until they get to know one another. If you have a communal play area like playtops on cages, they can be allowed out together for short periods with your full supervision. Never leave the room while they are out together until you know whether or not they like each other. Also having their wings clipped by an Avian Vet will ensure that they do not fly at each other or into walls or out the door.

Have ONLY the 4-6 primary flight feathers clipped, and these are the long feathers at the ends of each wing. Do not allow anyone to cut up any higher as this causes chronic pain in bird's wings and causes them to fall like rocks and be hurt.

While at the Avian Vet's, have them examined and tested for bacterial infections which are common with birds being moved around as this causes undue stress and brings their immune systems down. Birds thrown together with other birds in pet stores most always have infections that will have to be diagnosed and treated by Avian Vet. Have vet do a THROAT SWAB to test for bacterial infections as this is more effective than anal swabs. Also, general bloodwork will have to be done to see about viral infections or any issues with organ function. The bloodwork will give you a baseline picture of your birds' health which will come in very handy on down the road. A baseline shows normal liver, kidney, thyroid and parathyroid functions. If something shows up abnormal, then this is an issue that can be taken care of right then and there.

We always recommend avian vet exams during the first few days of getting new birds, and bacterial infections are the most common though others can be present. Have a fresh stool sample to test for internal parasites too.

I love the little parrotlets, and they are wonderful pets who are highly intelligent and emotions function at a very high level too. Parrots have roughly the mental/emotional development of 4-5 year old human children, so they will always need firmness tempered with gentleness, kindness and understanding. They will always be like little children, so they never outgrow the need for their human caretaker's watchful eye as for eating or drinking potentially dangerous substances. They also will always need your love and commitment to their highest and best good all around.

Putting female parrotlets together
by: Tracie

Nobody knows but the birds. They may get along or they may fight. No matter what you must keep them in separate cages until THEY decide they want to live together.

If you are getting two females that already live together, then they should do fine together.

If you decide to try to put two birds together that did not grow up in the same cage, then you can read our "Should I buy another green cheek conure?" article on our Parrot Training page for help in attempting to get birds to get along.
