Parrots laying eggs

by Sheri Thomas
(San Antonio texas USA)

We found the parrot in the street 9 months ago -we called vets and went to pet stores and advertised-no one claimed it so we kept it. Yesterday I discovered it had laid an egg. It sits on it most of the time. I need to clean its cage but I don't know what I should do.Can I move the egg? Will it hatch? Also what should I feed it besides pelleted food? It is a Quaker. I bought books at the pet store but they do not cover eggs! Should I take it to a vet? Help.

Quaker parrot laid egg

Yes, you should eventually take the bird to an avian vet. Please call one and ask if you should wait until it is not sitting on the egg(s) though.

Find an Avian Vet

Our avian vet suggests that the bird be allowed to sit on the egg(s) until they lose interest, or they may continue to lay eggs. Please read our Chronic Egg Laying for more information on birds laying eggs and the care they need.
