Parsley poisonous to hook bills

by Butch Mueller

Hi, I really appreciate your list of plants, fruits, etc. Toxic and non toxic for birds. But I did notice you have parsley as non toxic to birds. After loosing several birds ( hook bills)and couldn't figure out why, I was told by several budgie breeders, after I told them I gave those birds parsley, that parsley is actually poisonous to hook bills.I just thought I'd
share this with you about what I have experienced and learned from professional budgie breeders.

Thank you

Butch Mueller

Ugh, more misinformation..
by: Renae

This is crazy! Parsley has been shown time and time again to be healthy. I've only had positive experiences with feeding my parrots parsley. They love the stuff, and it's chock full of health promoting vitamins and minerals.

My birds eat tons of parsley from the garden, and have never shown any nasty side effects. I often have a bunch hanging in their cages all day for them, and by day's end they've chewed it up and eaten a decent amount of it.

Parsley was actually one of the first fresh foods I could convince one of my parrots to eat (after the previous owner had been feeding only seed). After a couple months of including parsley into the diet (as it was still the only fresh food she would touch), this bird molted and her new feathers were stunningly shiny and healthy compared to previous molts. Her health only improved with the addition of parsley to her diet. Obviously more improvements happened as she accepted more fresh foods, but I only saw good things after including parsley.

The claim that parsley is toxic for parrots has been completely unfounded. Spreading this kind of misinformation will only lead to many parrots missing out on this nutrient filled treat! The only thing I'd be careful with is feeding store bought parsley without washing it extremely well to remove any toxic pesticides.

Editor's note: Did you notice that the avian vet already posted that it is safe?

Is parsley safe for birds?
by: The Avian Vet

I have never heard of parsley being a problem and have fed it to many birds without issues. Did any of the birds that died have a necropsy to determine the cause of death, instead of relying on the speculation of a breeder? It would be very important to do this, because there are many contagious diseases that would cause outbreaks and death in a flock.

Solid scientific evidence of a toxic plant not discovered before would be very useful for the avian industry.

You have been misinformed

Parsley is widely used for hook bill consumption. Not only is it safe, it is very good for their health.

Parsley being labeled toxic for many years has absolutely no proof! It is yet another rumour that humans have eagerly taken on board & it's stuck, unfortunately.

For parrots it is a good source of iron, beta carotene and vitamins B1, B2 and C. Parsley contains most of the amino acids that are the "building blocks" of protein. Medicinal benefits: Parsley is useful as a blood purifier. It detoxifies harmful contaminants, promotes healthy skin and feathers, tones the digestive system, prevents kidney ailments and treats arthritis. It also acts as a natural antibiotic.

I suggest in future if your birds die you may like to take them to an avian vet for a necropsy. Not all 'professional' breeders know what they are talking about with some things. As this is the only actual way you can determine why the birds died rather than guessing & presuming :)) You also might like to do a little research on parsley as well as other foods & myths.

BTW I give my birds parsley & they have NEVER died from eating parsley :)

Parsley on the toxic list for birds
by: Tracie

Thanks! I have adjusted the Toxic / Non-toxic for birds list so that all the lists reflect parsley to be toxic for birds. It could be like many items that people feed their birds a little of and because nothing happens it is assumed it is safe for all birds or in all quantities.
