find the cause
by: Anonymous

It can't be cured without finding the cause.

Diet is not necessarily the reason for plucking! And I guess my avian vet with 30+ years eclectus experience is one of those who doesn't know what he's talking about...

Anyway please GOOGLE eclectus parrots to get more detailed information on their care needs. There is conflicting info & you need to sift through the site to find the correct resources.

You also need to know exactly why your bird has started plucking. You cannot cure it unless you know the cause, simple as that.

goodbirdinc. is THE best behaviouralist online. Barbara is very experienced in dealing with behaviours & resolving them. Please visit her website.

Editor's note: We have Barbara's book on our books on caring for birds page.

Eclectus picking feathers
by: Tracie

This is a problem with Eclectus. There is conflicting information on the Internet about what the best diet for Eclectus is, and sometimes diet is the problem.

Please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article written by an avian vet.

Dr B, who has been an avian vet for over 30 years and teaches avian courses at a university says, "Eclectus do better on about 65-70% pellets and 30-35% fresh vegetables and other healthy treats."

There are people who raise Eclectus that will tell you different, and even some avian vets. Dr B owns an Eclectus parrot and treats many Eclectus and makes his recommendation according to his continuing education and experience.
