Pinkish bump on Parakeet's base of tail

by Hollywood

My parakeet has a rather large bump on the top side of her body, near the beginning of the tail. She's been seemingly fine for the past year that she has had it. At times it seems to go away or start to diminish in size, but other times she bites at it and causes it to grow and sometimes even bleed a bit.

I was just wondering if it could be some sort of tumor, or an irritation. She still eats, sleeps, plays and sings, but I know Parakeets don't usually show pain as a defense mechanism. Should I be worried?

Bump on base of parakeet's tail

Because Dr B can not see and examine your bird, he can not tell you if this is a tumor, infection or what. You need to take your bird to an avian vet to be examined in person.

Birds do have a preen gland at the base of their tail, but it should never cause your bird to pick at it and bleed. I would make an appointment right away if I were you.
