Pionus with a nut allergy?

by Kerri
(UK)

Hi, We have just taken a Pionus into our home after the owner was unable to take care of him. We gave him some nuts last night, hazelnut, brazil nut, pecan, and raw sweet chestnut. Shortly after he starting wheezing quite badly.
We gave him the treatment that came with him for wheezing and he is fine this morning.

We are booking him in for a complete checkup with an avian vet.

I was wondering if there has ever been a nut allergy diagnosed in a parrot?

Many Thanks, Kerri

Bird with nut allergies?

What treatment?

You asked, "

Not nut allergies, but reactions to molds on peanuts. I do not recommend feeding peanuts to parrots. This could also be a normal noise often seen in Pionus. You should have him examined by an avian veterinarian.

Bird allergic to nuts?

I have not heard of this. Dr B has not been available for answering questions due to a personal emergency. Please Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird.
