Plucked Lumpy Tiel Please Help

by Megan Maree Wright

We have a cockatiel that we've had for about 2 years now and last year it started to pluck its feathers. Sometimes it gets better and they start to grow back but then it just plucks them all again and now its almost completely bald. Also there is a strange lump thing on its chest that isn't there all the time and sometimes it gets really big.

When you press on it it feels like a beanbag full of beans but doesn't seem to hurt we were wondering what it might be and if it has anything to do with the plucking.

Also if its plucking from boredom what can we do to help as it won't play with any toys that we put in there.

My cockatiel suddenly started plucking her feathers. I took her to the vet and they treated her for Giardia. He didn't test her because he said it dosen't always show up. Ten days on the antibiotic and she no longer plucks. That was at Christmas and we are still waiting for her feathers to come back. She looks like a ball of fluff. They are starting to look better. If the antibiotics don't work try Pluck-No-More
and a bird bath spray with aloe vera like Avi-x Bird Rain.

Plucking Cockatiel and lump
by: The Vet

I think the lump is the crop, but you need to have your bird examined to be certain.

The plucking may be caused by Giardia or one of many many other things that cause plucking. I have never seen a cockatiel with behavioral plucking. It is always a disease or illness that causes it in cockatiels. I recommend that you have your bird seen and worked up by an avian veterinarian.

Cockatiel plucking

While we are waiting for Dr. B to respond, you should read his responses to others with plucking problems.

I am sure that Dr. B will suggest that you take your bird to an avian vet to be examined. You might want to go ahead make an appointment.

Plucking feathers
by: Judy

Does your bird have the freedom of going in and out of his cage? Some birds do become bored if they don't get to come out of there cages often. That will cause them to pluck their feathers. As as the have a lump on it's body, I would get your bird to a bird vet.
