plucking and scratching

My husband got me a senegal parrot from a friend. His friend did not spend alot of time with the bird. that was his reason for getting rid of him. He had already been plucking his feathers when I got him. He has plucked out feathers on his neck and chest.

He scratches frequently. How can i tell if he has mites or if he is just stressed out. I have been spending alot of time with him and have seen an improvment in his behavior but he is still plucking and scratching. I also notcied his poop. I have never had a parrot before so I am not sure what it is suppost to look like. If my parrot had worms would I be able to tell?

He really should go see an avian vet to make sure he does not have any skin issues. The scratching tells me he may well have a problem.

Senegal plucking and scratching

It is sweet that you rescued this bird and are trying to help him.

There are many issues that can cause a bird to pluck and scratch. The only way to determine what is wrong and have the specific treatment is to take the bird to an avian vet for tests.

Even if you think it is mites, and that is rarely the case, do NOT treat the bird with non-prescription stuff from the stores. These products cause more health issues and make it harder to determine what is really wrong.
