Plum Headed Parakeet

Hi, I got male headed parakeet about a month ago that is 10 or so years old. Today I caught him picking up and eating his own poop!.. I am worried that he will get some sort of sickness so please contact me as soon as possible. and P.S., is their anything I shout do to make him stop doing this? -and- is this because he has a lack of proteins? So should I give him egg or something else to him for him to stop?

I breed Plum Heads

Have you tried putting a mineral block, and cuttle bone in his cage? I feed mine a wide range of fruits and veges brown rice, puffed wheat and puffed rice, boiled egg, and a good vitamin enhanced seed mix. if he is not eating a wide range of foods you might want to try that. Hope this helps.

parakeet messing with it's dried poop
by: Tracie

It is unlikely your bird is eating it's poop, it is probably cleaning it's cage. If you are feeding your bird a high quality pellet diet, like Harrison's or Roudybush you don't have to worry about nutrition though.

If you feel your bird may not be healthy, then please Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird. If quality pellets are not available where you live, then please contact an avian vet or breeder that lives in your country and ask them what to do.
