possible broken toe (caique)

My macaw escaped out of his cage at night and climbed onto my caique cage and bit my caique's toe while he was hanging onto the cage bars! Can a toe be set (like a cast on humans)? It scraped a little skin off of the caiques toe and the toe is swollen, but is not bleeding. It is possible it could be broken.

My caique (Leonard) does not want to put weight on that foot, but, still picks up food with the foot to eat. I put neosporin on it and made an appointment with my avian vet....just in case. It does not feel warm or cold (normal). But, I don't want it to get infected. I would rather not give anitbiotics unless absolutely necessary.

I have given Baytril recommended by my vet in the past for other inquires. I would rather be "safe that sorry". I tend to panic if anything happens to any of my avian buddies! I think the injury bothers "me" more than it does Leonard (my caique)! He is a bird I rescued.....they all mean the world to me.

Don't use neosporin on birds
by: Tracie

As stated in this post, it is not suggested you use neosporin on birds. Besides them ingesting it, they can spread it on the rest of their feathers etc.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

possible broken toe

Thanks for the response. I called my avian vet and was told to put a little neosporin on it. I only put a little one time....I will not use it again, though, since I am getting conflicting responses. My caique is using the injured foot with a little limp. I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe it is just swollen from the scrape on it when he got bitten. The bite scraped a little skin off, but, not a deep bite. I'm sure it is bruised. Locks are on all outlets of the macaws cage now....even the feed bowl doors! Problem solved. I did not know that my macaw had gotten to be such an escape artist. She is not an aggressive bird....but, I guess the caique's toes were just too tempting!

Bird with possible broken toe
by: Tracie

It is good you are going to see an avian vet. Dr B says NOT to put neosporin on birds because it is greasy and not good for the birds to ingest. The bird could potentially spread this to his feathers when preening and it will keep the bird from regulating it's temperature.

Your vet can straighten the toe if need be also. Dr B can't really help with this situation since he can not examine your bird, sorry.

I guess it goes without saying that you need to by some cage locks for the other bird's cage so this doesn't happen again.
