protrusion from rectum

(Idaho)

I have an umbrella cockatoo that should be about 18 years old. We have had her for about 5 years. She lays eggs sporadically although we have never bred her.The last one was approximately 3to5 weeks ago. We have noticed a large round, red protrusion from her annal area at times. Usually she appears to be straining some, or hollering loudly, as she does when she wants my attention, when we notice it. She is acting normal otherwise and the protusion is not there all the time, as I thought a prolapse would be. She is eating and drinking and seems to enjoy going outside to her aviary. She still wants to be with me, as usual, and is talking and trying to sing a song to me. She is still yelling at me to come get her off her swing to sit with me.She does not seem to be in distress at this time. If anything she just may not be quite as loud and vocal as she sometimes is.

This is something that must be diagnosed in person right away. Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
