Softbill birds like the Pidgeon do not have a crop like a parrot does. They have a gizzard which holds small pieces of the grit she needs to be able to process her food.Parrots do not need grit because they have a crop which processes the food before it goes into the stomach.

It sounds like this is an infection, and you will need to take her into an Avian Vet in your driving area to find out what is wrong here. If she has an infection, the babies are also infected, so take the entire family in for an exam and treatment if necessary. Baby birds die all the time from bacterial infections as they have no immune system to speak of being so new and young.

You may also have to start hand-feeding the babies baby parrot formula with a syringe, so I'd suggest you take them all to the Avian Vet and see what needs to be done. Handfeeding softbills is easy, and they will take the food readily. This may not be necessary unless the Vet advises you to have the mother stop feeding them. Also ask him how much and how often you'll need to feed the babies if you have to. The Mother may be able to continue feeding them if this is just a simple infection, so do not delay taking them to the Avian Vet as the longer you wait, the more chance you have of losing all of them.

Keep us posted on what vet had to say. You can find the handfeeding formula in pet stores and here on this site. Get a small syringe or two from the Avian Vet while you are there. To keep the syringes clean, you can use bleach at a ratio of 1 teaspoon per gallon of water--never use more bleach than this as it leaves residue which will hurt babies. Most people think the more bleach the better, and 1 teaspoon per gallon of water kills everything you can think of and more.

Thanks for writing and good luck,
Linda
