pulling out feathers

My mom's sun conure for no reason a couple of days ago got very upset started squawking and either pulled out all of her flight feathers or they fell out for some reason and when my mom tried to see what was going on the bird bit her.

Now at first she said it looked like the wing was broken but that was not the case. She has had the conure since it was 6 weeks old and that was about 18 years ago. She is really upset about this and I was wondering if you could help. Thank you.

Bird pulling out feathers

This could be from something as serious as a seizure are as minor as thrashing from being frightened or startled. She should take her bird in to see an avian veterinarian.

Just some notes on prevention:

Be sure she is eating a pellet diet to prevent deficiencies such as calcium, which can cause seizures. I prefer Harrison's

Be sure to have lots of light so she can see well and prevent being startled. It is best to provide full spectrum lighting.

Be sure she can see someone approaching from all directions to prevent being startled. It is best to have at least one side of the cage against a wall for security and protection.

Have her examined by an avian veterinarian. Health concerns to consider are poor eyesight, seizures, nutritional deficiencies, and organ disease.
