Quaker Parrot lower beak stuck on cage door loop hook.

by Claye
(North Carolina)

We have a Quaker Parrot and 2 days ago she got her beak stuck on the cage door loop where the vertical bar loops around the bar of the cage to go up and down. Thankfully I was present and figured out what was wrong. To me it looked like she hooked her lower beak with the gap onto the hooked bar. I was able to get her unstuck.

Her beak looks ok, but there was some bleeding. She also lost a good bit of tail feathers and some feathers from one of her wings. She's been moving around, but quiet. Today she's moving carefully but staying in one spot. She's also eating soft food that we give her. We also have her in the sun from our window to keep her warm.

We'd take her to a vet, but she is still at the biting stage and she does not like to be taken from her cage. That is why we are a bit cautious about moving her. I know she was panicked because she was breathing hard after I got her unstuck and she got on her perch. We don't want to stress her even further when trying to help her.

As I type this, she is eating some pear.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hook from hanging toys stuck under beak
by: sun-conure Patience

Hey we just separated our sunconure from hook that hangs toys. It was either not completely closed her she has been playing with it that it loosened. Her symptoms are similar to your Quaker Parrot. I dont have 100s of dollars to take her to a vet. I just called and their prized are ridicious...I am panicking right now waiting for the breeder to contact me.

Patience is sitting on the perch next to sun as well, her feathers are all puffy and out, she looks weak but every now and then she picks herself up. Under her beak you can see the hook slider under and it appears to be read might me blood, nothing coming out but done know if their is internal bleeding...I am hoping and praying to god that she will self heal. Any suggestions.

Quaker Parrot lower beak stuck on cage door loop hook.

Our Quaker Parrot is on the rebound. She was moving a lot more yesterday than she was the past couple days. Today she said her first words since the accident 4 days ago. She is now acting and moving like her normal self.

Quaker parrot with injured beak
by: The Avian Vet

Medical attention outweighs any stress that could come of it. You need to take her to see an avian veterinarian as soon as possible. They can examine her to be sure there is no serious injury and can give her pain medication to get her eating normal food again. I assume her normal diet is pellets. Pellets should be 80% of the diet, and treats should make up only 20%. Harrison's is the best in my opinion.
