Rainbow Lorikeet breathing strangely...

by Sandra

My Rainbow Lorikeet (about 5 months old) has started making unusual wheezing and heavy breathing sounds when he gets excited or is playing. Sometimes he will put his head right up and bob it with his mouth open - like he is trying to clear his throat.

He is still full of energy, playful, eats plenty and shows no other signs of illness, we were wondering whether he is simply trying to mimic more sounds or perhaps he has a seed or something stuck in his throat? If so shouldn't he be more distressed?

Lories are very animated and this may simply be a play behavior. However, anytime there is question about his health, you should have him examined by an avian veterinarian. It is also a good idea to have regular well-bird check ups annually.

If there are no other symptoms of illness, then this is probably behavior. However, remember that birds are very good at hiding signs of illness, so take him to be seen to be sure he is healthy.
