Red feathers on yellow ringneck.Still a female????!!!!!!

Hi, wondering if someone could help me. I have a 3 year old yellow ring necked parrot. The people at the store informed that she was a girl. but just recently she has been getting a lot of red feathers. Why would this be?

No idea whatsoever. You'll need to talk with the breeder or pet shop she came from to get more information. The yellow color is a mutation, so not sure what all happens as they get older. The natural color of these birds is green.

Let us know what you find out because your information can help someone else.

Thanks for writing,

DNA will rule out ALL!

Hi there, I have a young I.R.N. I have yet to see what it will be, right now the previous owner says it is a female, she carries all the characteristics... I don't go by colors of feathers sometimes because with bird mutants and mixed parents some times anything can happen. lol. / I think you should just get your bird tested. The ring around the neck is usually your best option. I have seen charts online that show a female and a male and actually arrows each difference. I see that the female is chunkier, bigger feet then the male, fatter beak and stockier all around. Looks fuller. The male has smaller feet, dark rink around the neck in mature years and is sleeker, pointier beak. Google... it helps. OTherwise..check out a DNA tester!
