red rump parakeet nostril nodules

by Susanne Gibson
(Mary Esther Florida)

My red rump parakeet has developed a growth on his nostril and his nose seems to be a little cloudy inside He is acting normally except more aggressive when I feed him. And he may be sleeping a little more than normal. Is this age related? or a vitamin problem? Does the vet have medicine for such problems? Or should I let it run its course?

Thank you for this answer. I did take him to a vet and started him on a course of medicine. I just hope I did not wait too long. The vet was unsure of what he had so he is on antibiotics and he will do more research on this type of problem.

I'm sorry to inform you but illness and disease with birds "does not run its course". What happens is the bird becomes sicker and sicker and then dies when left undiagnosed and untreated with any kind of infection or disease. They do not just "get over" things like we do. Birds have only gram positive bacteria in their bodies if in optimum health. Humans and other animals have gram negative bacteria in their bodies, and this is what causes infections with birds. They can handle smaller amounts of the gram negative bacteria and when it becomes an overgrowth, then they become ill and have to be diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet ONLY.

Your bird cannot be diagnosed on the internet and do not give any home remedies or over the counter meds because until you know what is wrong, it cannot be treated without much danger to your bird.

To sum up, you cannot wait to take him to an Avian Vet because he will become much sicker to the point of not eating and then death.
