Red Rump plucking its tail reahers

by Justin
(Salisbury)

i have got opaline red rumps, on male and one female, and the male keeps plucking his own tail feathers and has only got a few left. The female doesnt pluck much and has got really nice feathers. They have got a full room in the house to themselves and i am in the process of making an outdoor aviary too. why does he keep plucking them? and will they grow back?

It may be a very good idea to take him to an Avian Vet to make sure he is harboring no infections or parasites. Mites are impossible to see with the naked eye. Also, take the female in as well because what he has she has also.

Otherwise, it is a mystery, so the Avian Vet will have to sort it out.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
