redness around one eye

by heather
(calgary alberta canada)

Hi, I noticed day before yesterday my black headed caique has a bit of red and puffiness along the top of one eye, and now I think his other eye area is turning a little pink too. His eyes are clear, he isnt blinking or scratching it, it doesnt seem to bother him one bit. Could his UV light be too close to his cage? It has been very cold -41 celcius and dry here, could that area get "chapped", sorta like our lips do?

About redness around eye
by: Anonymous

Well I took my caique to the vet and it turns out after a complete exam and bloodwork, that it must be a dryness "chapped" area from the extreme change in tempurature and humidity. All his bloodwork came back normal, and after a visit in the incubator with tons of humidity his eyelid is better. Also using Avi-x Bird Rain....a product made of aloe which is good for his skin. So I guess, yes, it is possible for a bird to get "chapped" eyelids. lol

Redness above bird's eye

I think your UV full spectrum light is too close. It needs to be more than 18 inches away, but I put it 24 inches away. The eyelids do not become ?chapped?. I would recommend taking him in to see an avian veterinarian to be sure it is not something more serious such as infection.
