We are planning on relocating to HI and that is a 16-17hrs flight. I have an Alexandrine Parakeet that I would love to bring along but, I'm not sure if it is safe for him. Will it be too much stress for him? Or could it be just too long? I would really appreciate some input. Thankyou.

Traveling to Hawaii with bird

It will be stressful but you can reduce the stress by bringing him on board and not allowing him to go into the cargo hold.

First of all, if bird goes with you, he will need to ride inside the plane and NOT in the luggage compartment. Smaller birds can be taken on plane as carry on, but here is what you need to do right now.

You need to take your bird into an Avian Vet in your area and discuss this long flight with them to see if this is safe for the bird. If vet thinks he could withstand this long a flight then you could take him. If not, you need to get busy finding him another home--not just any home, but a really good home with people who know about birds. The Avian Vet may be able to help you with this. You need to get to work now though so bird is not left in a lurch at the last minute as that is unfair to him.

As for moving all the way to HI, your bird may become ill either from the long flight or from the new climate in HI. Talk with the Avian vet and proceed from there. Travel is usually fun for birds, but this long a plane ride just may hurt him.

Good luck, and work hard to find him a new home with people who know about birds or those who are willing to read books and take bird to vet and learn about him.
