Rescued yellow nape biting

by Dawn

I rescued a Yellow Nape about 3 years ago. My bird will not allow me to touch him at all, in fact he has attacked me a few times and I have taken a nasty bite. I am now afraid of taking another bite. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can help my bird?

Yellow Naped Amazon biting

Bless you for rescuing this bird. :-)

The bird likely has trust issues and may be hormonal too. First make sure the bird is healthy by having it examined by an avian vet. A sick bird is an irritable bird.

Make sure the bird is eating a healthy pellet diet too. Cheap pellets and colored pellets have sugar and chemicals that not only lower their immune system but can cause behavior problems too. Peanuts have also been cited for causing behavioral issues in some parrots.

Our avian vet suggests that Amazons be fed 80% Harrison's or Roudybush pellets and only 20% healthy treats. Switching Birds To Pellets article

We have training articles on our Parrot Training page that may help you develop a relationship of trust and be able to train your bird not to bite. Part of the training is training you to notice their body languange and respect when they don't want to be handled to keep from being bit.
