Ringneck parakeet unwell

Does anyone know what was wrong with our parakeet?
The other night he was sitting in his seed bowl for a few hours (he's never done this before) leaning his head back on the perch, all scrunched up, eyes shut, and shallow breathing as if he didn't have the energy for anything. He is not tame, although we've had him about 17 years. My mum went up to him and touched his head gently, and he opened his eyes but didn't move. Normally he would flap and not let you do this, so something was definitely very wrong with him.

We thought we were going to lose him that night. But the following morning, he was back up sitting on his perch! We were so relieved and amazed the next day to see him back up on his perch again, but mystified as to what it was that happened to him that night. Since then, he has been eating, chirruping, moving about ok, but if anything, he has been sleeping inbetween all this a bit more than normal. other than that, he seems ok. We just wondered what on earth was wrong with him, will he be ok, or could this happen again etc.
Many thanks for reading this :-)

I have no clue what was wrong, or if it will happen again, but I would take the bird to an avian vet for a check up.

Obviously something is wrong, and just because it is better now doesn't mean it won't happen again and the next time your bird may die.
