rubbing himself

by Kathleen

I have a male parakeet that was given to me by my sister so I have no idea his age. I give him lots of toys and he is very social and almost seems to get an attitude if I do not give him time out of his cage with us.

My issue is he rubs himself so much that is annoying. He will hang onto a toy or the cage and lean back and rub himself on the perch. I change out his toys to give him stimulation but I didn't know if this was a sexual thing or possible problem.

I have read about some people thinking it may be constipation problems but that doesn't seem to be an issue. Is this a behavior that we just live with? He is a good companion, has quite a personality for a little bird, and is talking a little. Thank you.

Male bird rubbing himself
by: The Vet

This sounds like masturbation, which is a common behavior in male budgies. I do not think that it is a problem for him, but you may want to have him examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure he is healthy. Birds should see a vet annually for check ups and vaccines.

I have never seen constipation cause this behavior, but it is worth a trip to the vet to be sure your bird is healthy. Check to see if he is passing normal droppings and a normal number of droppings each day. If he is, then he is not constipated. Constipation is a rare problem in birds.
