Its okay unless...

I recently weened my Eclectus off pellets to a straight all veggie/grains diet. Her poop has been runny but thats normal for any animal when you start switching foods over. Its important to do it slowly and mix what you are weaning them off of with the new stuff gradually so they don't get a stomach upset. As long as they are not showing any other signs of distress (lethargy, not eating, dull eyes) I'd hold off I'd hold off a couple days and see if its a diet issue.

Wow, folks. Sometimes birds have runny poops. It can come simply from greater water intake. My eclectus will have runny poops after 2 grapes. It's only of concern if it's over an extended period of time.

Also, a diet of fruits and vegetables is hardly "atrocious." Yes, pellets should be give as the staple, but this should be in addition to a large supply of fruits and vegetables... That's what eclectus eat. Ever wonder why their beaks and jaws aren't as strong as other birds their size?

Eclectus need a diet full of vegetables and fruit- but also very important are beans and sprouts. Harrison's pellets are great- but should NEVER be the majority of the bird's diet- I don't know if Linda (in the previous comments) is familiar with the specific needs of an eclectus diet. Definitely go to an avian specialist- and make sure they are specifically familiar with Eclectus birds. They have different needs than other birds.

Editor's note: Our avian vet DOES suggest Harrison's for eclectus. Our avian vet teaches at a veterinary university, and is familiar with eclectus. He also says Totally Organics pellets are good.

you may also want to check and find out what pellet the bird was eating before the diet you mentioned is not complete and that alone would give the bird runny stool. also do not give an abundance of grapes, even with a complete pellet diet too many grapes will cause diarhea,

Ekkies & runny poo
by: Anonymous

Hi

A sudden change in food can do this. Birds should be converted to a healthy diet slowly. Also feeding a fresh healthy human food diet will cause your eclectus to have runny poo.

Definitely take him to an avian vet for his first health check & to rule out any health issues related to runny poo. And after your first bird died after a symptom of runny poo, it is vital to scrub & disinfect your home & cage & supplies. Otherwise you will risk of your new bird being infected with what ever was wrong with your previous bird & possibly dying as well.

You can also have a look at specific dietary requirements for the ecelctus:

Runny Eclectus Poo

Yes, as Tracie said, you must get him into see an Avian Vet immediately. The diet you have him on is atrocious, and you need to get organic, high quality pellets and limit the fruits and veggies because they cause all kinds of digestive upsets if that's all this bird is eating. He is starving for real food, and Tracie carries several kinds of the organic pellets out here with Harrison's being Avian vet endorsed.

So, you have to take him to Avian Vet, and you have to get some organic pellets and start feeding them and limit the fruit and veggies. Your bird will die on a diet of nothing but fruit and veggies. Buy the organic pellets because the cheaper ones are cheap in more ways than just price. They have dyes, preservatives, pesticide/fertilizer residue and not fit for a parrot to eat.

Here is link about how to change bird over to the pellets, and if he is NOT eating seeds, do not start feeding him seeds, as he may take right to the pellets since he is starving at present:

Switching Birds to Pellets article.

Please have your bird checked by an Avian Vet and get him some decent food now, not later.

Thanks for writing,
Linda

Has your Eclectus seen an avian vet? Also, did you have a necropsy done on the bird that died? There may be something in your home that is doing this. If your bird has not been vaccinated and examined by an avian vet, please do this ASAP.

You can look for an avian vet on our Find an Avian Vet page if you do not have an avian vet already.

There are Eclectus forums on the Internet you can join also. I suggest that you talk to other Eclectus owners for feeding advice.
