Scratched Eye

Left Eye

My 13 yr. old Blue-Gold Macaw has a large scratch under his left eye where I believe he scratched it with his toe. He is not tame because the elderly man I got him from did nothing except feed & water him. I'm trying to get him used to human contact, but it's taking time.

I try to put some Neo-sporin on his eye with a Q-Tip and all he does is bite. The scratch is oozing clear liquid, but no blood. It's a fight just to blanket him in a dark room to trim his toenails. Any suggestions on how to clear up the scratch? I know it has to bother him.
Thanks.

B&G with scratched eye

Your bird needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian. The scratch could be more serious than it appears. It could also involve the eye. Do not use Neosporin. It is not meant to go into the eye and can cause damage if it does.

This not something that you should attempt alone. The vet will have some one restrain your bird safely and be able to treat it properly with the right medications. Plus the Dr. will give your bird a full exam.
