my son was given a cockatiel and in the last few days he has started to scratch the feathers out from around his eyes, we are wondering if it stress from changing owners

Not likely. It could be nutritional, environmental (such as low humidity), or even infections. I recommend that you have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian.

It could be any number of things causing this, but I don't think it would be stress.

Also, we have a Safe and non-safe items for birds list on our site as well that you should keep handy.

If the air in your bird room is very dry, this can cause your bird to scratch and also internal infections can cause your bird to scratch.

It is best to take your bird to see an avian vet when you bring a new bird home. Dr B will post his answer within the next few days.
