screaming Goffins Cockatoo

by Marsha
(Tampa)

I just rescued a Goffin's Cockatoo. they said she was about 2 years old, and was not a screamer. Now she screams all day long, she never tires until bedtime. I play with her as much as possible (on average 4 hours a day or more) but when its time for her to be in her cage she just screams.

Is there anything I can do to make her stop this behavior?

Thanks, M

If your new rescued bird has not been seen by an Avian Vet, then that is the first stop on your list. Possibly there is a physical cause for the screaming, and that has to be ruled in or out before beginning any training program. Tracie's advice is sound after bird is given a clean bill of health by an Avian Vet or medicines to cure an infection or other physical problem. All new birds need to be seen in the first week by an Avian Vet because moving to new homes is stressful, and Cockatoos are some of the more sensitive species of birds along with the Macaws.

Let us know how everything goes and thanks for writing,
Linda

Please check out the articles on our Parrot Training page. What you will need to do, is train the bird that you will not respond to screaming, and teach it a new, preferred behavior, that you will respond to.

It takes time and patience, but if you are already spending 4 hours a day with the bird, you probably have the time. The patience thing is a toughy sometimes. ;-)
