Senegal Parrot Freaks Out

by Holly
(BC, Canada)

I've had my senegal parrot Peachie for 10 years now and recently he's started to act strangely when I open his cage. I put my hand out for him to climb up on and instead of calmly climbing up my arm, he jumps, freaks out and can end up all the way across the room. Some days he will be happy and playful, let me pet him, stay on my should all evening, and other times he makes little panicked sounds if I even come near him.

I'm not quite sure what to do or why he's acting like this. Maybe it's the cage? Being left alone while I'm at work? Please help?

It is impossible for us to answer your questions about cage and being at work as we don't have enough information.

What is a sure thing is sudden changes in behavior normally point to an infection or other physical issue.

It would be a great idea to take him to be examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area. Have him examined for both bacterial and viral infections and have some routine bloodwork done to see how organs are functioning.

If all these tests come back clear for physical issues, then we'll need to know what kind of cage he has, what kinds of perches, toys and what kind of food he's eating. Make sure you have taken him to the Avian Vet first because if he's sick, then that would explain all of the behavior.
