Severe Macaw Allergies

I think our severe macaw of 16 years experiences allergies. Her face ( the white part all around her nares) is very red especially during allergy season. I know this since I myself have severe/chronic allergies and the day she itches a lot, so do I. Do you think this is the case? What can we do to help her out? Thank you

Macaw with allergies
by: The Avian Vet

Although these symptoms can be caused by a number of different things, allergies are very common on macaws, especially blue and golds. My recommendation is have your bird examined and worked up by an avian specialist. Find an Avian Vet If you have a cockatoo (or other powder producing bird) also, then these birds must be kept in separate rooms.

You should plan to put in an air filtration unit (without ozone production) and give frequent baths. It is also important that you feed a healthy diet consisting of 80% pellets, 20% healthy treats. Harrison's or Roudybush are the best. Take him to see an avian veterinarian ASAP.

What you have is allergies and what your bird has may be an infection that has to be diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet ONLY. Do not take bird to dog and cat vet as they are not licensed or trained to care for birds and make incorrect diagnosis' and give incorrect dosages and types of meds. Do not give any home remedies or any over the counter meds including those found in pet stores. Until bird's infection is diagnosed by an Avian Vet, it cannot be treated since one has to know what to treat.

In short, take your bird to be examined by an Avian Vet as quickly as possible. The only times birds appear to have allergies is when something toxic is in their environments, so this is most likely an infection. Bird will not get well without being diagnosed and treated and will eventually die from whatever is making it sick.
